“We need 1,500 W stadium lights. Please send the price.”
This is a useful starting signal, but it is not a complete quotation basis. It may mean the client is replacing an existing 1,500 W luminaire, has seen a competitor’s product, or has estimated the power required from another project. None of those assumptions proves that the same wattage, optic, quantity or mounting arrangement will work on the current site.
A supplier can still provide an indicative price when information is limited, but it should be labelled accordingly. Presenting a provisional product price as a final project quotation creates false precision and transfers unresolved design risk into procurement.
What wattage tells you—and what it does not
Nominal wattage helps estimate connected load and compare broad product families. It does not tell the buyer how much useful light reaches the playing area, whether the field will be uniform, how the luminaires will appear to players, or whether the system will satisfy boundary and operating requirements.
Even luminaire efficacy in lumens per watt is not enough. Total lumens describe source output; project performance depends on photometric distribution, mounting geometry, aiming, surface area, maintenance assumptions and how much of the emitted light is useful at the required reference planes.
This is why an article about quotation should not become another general explanation of lumens or beam angles. Those parameters matter here only because they change the selected configuration and therefore the quotation.
Eight variables that can change the price even when wattage stays the same
Pole height, setback and layout
The same luminaire may require different optics, quantities or mounting arrangements when the throw distance and crossing angles change.
Training, competition or broadcast target
Higher or more complex criteria can change vertical illuminance, uniformity, flicker, colour quality, redundancy and controls.
Optical distribution and output setting
A quotation should identify the optic or optical mix used in the calculation, not only the housing and nominal power.
More fixtures or higher output per fixture
Two schemes may use similar connected load but differ in fixture count, structural load, uniformity, maintenance and installation cost.
Glare, spill and boundary constraints
Visors, reduced tilt, different optics, additional poles or more fixtures at lower output can change both equipment and engineering scope.
Weight, EPA and mounting interface
Existing poles and crossarms may limit the acceptable product configuration or require brackets, structural review and revised fixture distribution.
Driver location, surge protection and controls
Integrated versus remote drivers, control protocols, cabinets, cable interfaces and protection requirements affect the bill of materials.
Delivery, documentation and support
Incoterms, spares, photometric revisions, aiming tables, training, commissioning support and warranty conditions must be included or excluded explicitly.
Same nominal wattage does not create the same project

A Level 3 quotation is not necessarily a complete construction contract. Structural design, electrical installation, local approvals and commissioning may remain with other qualified parties. The document should make those boundaries visible.
Scope items that disappear from wattage-based comparisons
Product configuration
Exact model, wattage setting, CCT, CRI, optic, photometric file revision, lens or reflector version and any visor.
Mounting and structure interface
Brackets, crossarm adapters, fasteners, aiming range, remote-driver enclosures and stated structural assumptions.
Electrical and control scope
Driver arrangement, surge protection, dimming interface, control modules, cabinets, addressing and responsibility for integration.
Design documentation
Photometric report, IES/LDT register, layout, fixture schedule, aiming table, wiring information and revision count.
Delivery and lifecycle items

A quotation may be commercially lower because it excludes important items, not because the engineering solution is more efficient. Conversely, a higher quotation may contain unnecessary features. The correct comparison is therefore not “Which supplier has the lowest price per watt?” but “Which defined scope best meets the verified project requirements at acceptable lifecycle risk?”

Can a supplier provide any price from wattage alone?
Yes, a supplier can provide a unit price or an indicative budget for a stated product family. It should not be presented as a final project quotation because the quantity, optics, accessories, controls, delivery scope and suitability remain unresolved.
Can a 1,500 W metal-halide fixture be replaced by a 1,500 W LED fixture one for one?
Not automatically. The replacement should be checked against photometric distribution, mounting geometry, target criteria, structural limits, electrical conditions and controls. An LED solution may use a different wattage, quantity or optic to achieve the required result.
Why do two suppliers quote different quantities for the same field?
